Going Global: Trends and Undiscovered Voices in Contemporary Bulgarian Literature

Wednesday, April 2nd | 10:00 to 11:00 am | BolognaBookPlus Theatre

Unlike the Western European or American approaches to publishing literature in translation, that in the Balkans has been significantly underdeveloped in terms of agent traditions, copyright management, and local strategies for promoting national literatures. However, there has been a definite upsurge in publishing titles from the region in translation over the last few years as curiosity has been aroused about Bulgarian authors. Georgi Gospodinov and the International Booker Prize for the best-selling novel Time Shelter in 2023 shed a different light on contemporary Bulgarian literature and its newly emerging or already well-established voices. More and more Bulgarian titles reveal authentic voices that discuss modern topics like domestic violence, life in the wake of the end of the Cold War, feminist issues, or global warming. Many of the titles published build anti-utopian worlds and discuss universal themes through local voices. What is the actual reason that these titles are arousing more interest and what makes them appealing for the international literary scene?
