This Christmas, the Association for Culture and Literature get behind a project that is different, but full of love and hope – Little Writeroos. Stories from Small Ones for Big Ones. It’s a book with a cause, created by children in support of children who need urgent treatment.
For us, Little Writeroos comes just in time – on the eve of festive holidays, to remind us what the most valuable things in life are – health, family, love, home, friends, a good heart… And at the same time, to remind us that goodness is celebrated and supported every day of the year. Because this is a book written by the children of the Mary Eton Language Club, illustrated by a group of students from the National Academy of Art and New Bulgarian University, and intended for all grown-up readers. And last but not least, it is a book that helps – every month, the proceeds from its sale will be donated to emergency fundraising campaigns to raise money for children’s medical treatment.
This project, with its high added social value, is also an example of the most valuable investment we can make to improve children’s education, literacy, and social skills development. “The book was written in our creative writing classes. We created it as part of our socio-emotional and life skills program for children studying with us. Each year we have charity campaigns, with which we support children in need of medical treatment. This is how we teach our students perseverance, tenacity, volunteerism, and gratitude. And all this is supported by large doses of creative and critical thinking, which are mandatory ingredients for any child’s development,” says Maria Karaivanova, founder of Mary Eton and conceptual advisor of the project.
Nineteen young authors, students from grades 3, 4, and 5, participated in the creation of the collection of stories. Their stories begin and end unexpectedly, full of twists and turns and magic. So if you have any expectations for this book, just let go of them before you open its pages. In one way or another, they will surprise you, but they will also elegantly remind you that children have something to tell us.
In addition to the young authors, the project also includes eight young artists – students attracted by the charitable cause. They complement the children’s stories with original illustrations to arrive at the final result – a book written by children, but intended for adults. This original approach gives us, the adults, the opportunity to touch the wonders of the imagination of children and to remind ourselves that true love and acts of kindness are unconditional.
In just one evening – during the official presentation of the book at the end of November, 1500 levs was raised, which was donated to 18-year-old Chris with wishes for a speedy recovery (the campaign in support of Chris is here). The proceeds from the following sales of the stories will be used to support more children who are fighting for their lives and their health.
